Addiction

Addiction is an addiction, but not an illness. Yes? Why then is the fatality rate as high as 90%? Why is the pain during withdrawal similar to that suffered by cancer patients?

Drug addiction is a serious illness that begins with the occasional or forced ingestion of a drug, followed by the formation of a bad habit of systematic use and the development to constant use, i.e. drug addiction.

There are around 275 million drug addicts in the world. Drugs kill more than 500,000 people every year. For Kazakhstan, with its population of 19 million, even a small number of drug addicts pose a serious threat to national security. According to the Ministry of Health, the country has more than 18,500 registered drug addicts. Of those, 1,500 are women. In order to prevent drug addiction, Kazakhstan has established a multi- stage educational programme aimed at developing positive life skills in schools, colleges and first-year university students. Activities aimed at the prevention of drug addiction (actions, lectures and meetings, round tables, etc.) are conducted among adolescents and young people.

In Kazakhstan, medical care for drug addicts is provided in state drug treatment facilities: the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre for Medical and Social Problems of Drug Addiction; 20 drug treatment dispensaries; and nine specialized treatment facilities.

Uncontrolled cravings for psychotropic substances bring many social, physical, emotional and economic problems.

The rush of energy, the new colours of life that come with a new dose, eventually leads to serious dependence, and a person simply cannot exist without a new dose of the drug. The serious cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system malfunctions, periodic withdrawals, loss of friends, job, previous social circle, breaking of family ties, constant risk of infecting with fatal diseases - this is by no means a complete list of what awaits a drug addict in the very near future.

Are you a confident person and know you can stop at any time? Don't be fooled! In the case of drugs, this conceit does not go in vain. The drug will not look for a weakness of nature, it strikes a crushing blow to the brain, it will give you "happiness hormones", it will get you hooked on them secretly from your mind. The speed at which you will become addicted to drugs is prohibitive, and there is an abyss ahead...
